The wrong pot size is the most common reason a houseplant struggles. A pot that's too small dries out constantly and the roots start circling; in one that's too big, the soil stays wet and the roots suffocate. In this guide we go through simple sizing rules.
Basic rule: 2–4 cm of growing room
Choose a pot whose diameter is 2–4 cm larger than the current growing pot. Large floor plants (over a metre tall) can take 4–6 cm more. Don't jump straight to double the size — the plant will then put its energy into roots instead of leaves.
Indoors or outdoors?
For an outdoor pot, frost resistance and UV protection matter most. Ecopots pots are made from 80% recycled plastic and stone powder — the material withstands both frost and harsh sun year after year, and comes with a 10-year guarantee against breakage. Large pots (40–70 cm) suit patio trees and shrubs, balcony boxes suit railings.
Sub-irrigation saves effort
If you easily forget to water — or travel a lot — choose a model with a self-watering system. The water reservoir evens out the moisture and the plant drinks as needed. Especially useful for herbs and summer flowers.
